2-Mile Challenge

It’s now 2008, people, we’re running out of time. Bike riding is fun, and healthy. I personally challenge anyone who happens across this blog to the Clif bar 2-mile challenge. 2 miles is literally a 10 minute ride, and that’s not even if you’re gunning it. Ride to work, to the store, friends’ houses. If it’s close, ride. I know it’s winter and it’s cold, bundle up! Gloves, scarves, face bandannas! You’ll soon find that a cold weather ride can be really enjoyable if you’re properly dressed and have the right attitude. So here’s the 2-mile challenge, if any of you decide to take it I’d love if you’d post how you’re feeling about it.

Becoming Asexual

Does anyone have any tips on fully repressing one’s sexuality? I’d like to become completely and totally asexual. Imagine how much more work you could get done if you had no sexual urges, and the hurt you could avoid if you didn’t have any romantic involvement or longing for such. You could just have very good friends, and never be distracted by that beautiful girl who is inevitably going to lie to you and break your heart. Wouldn’t it be great if it was as simple as a surgical operation? Or some sort of medication? Please science, offer up a cure to sexuality; get cracking on cloning so that sexual reproduction is no longer needed and then start administering us the cure through our drinking water. We’ll all be much better off.

Facebook App Idea

So for a while now I’ve been wanting to write up a Facebook app but haven’t been able to think of anything to write. Finally have an idea!! My friend is having a party Friday night, and he had invited me on Facebook. I had forgotten when the party started, so then I was going to add his party to my Google Calendar when I had a ‘Eureka!’ Google Calendar + Facebook events app! Have events you RSVP to on Facebook, added to your Google Calendar, and depending on your RSVP (attending or maybe attending), set your busy status on GCal. I did a quick look through the available apps that have google in them, and didn’t see anything that did what I want to do. If someone finds one let me know so I don’t waste my time. Maybe I’ll just use theirs, or improve it if it’s needed. So off I go to learn the GData protocol, and the Facebook API. I’ll give some reports as time goes on. This isn’t a priority so development will probably be pretty slow.

Planet of Ice is
Minus the Bear’s latest release. Released in 2007 on
Suicide Squeeze, this is by far the band’s greatest release yet.
This album is pure sex, and I don’t mean to say that in the way
that kids in high school would replace ‘cool’ with ‘sex’, I mean
that this album is full of not-so-subtle sexual undertones. I have
to admit that while listening to it I was/am getting pretty
excited. It was a long train ride. One of Minus the Bear’s
strengths has always been their very unique
jazzy-progressive-math-rock sound. They have nailed the atmosphere
of a dimly lit hipster party full of coked out fashionistas
perfectly. This Album is no exception to that. The songs just make
you want to find a partner and slow jam your way into their room
and remain there for the rest of the evening and well into the
next day. I’m a sucker for a good lead synth line, not going to
lie. Minus the Bear’s synth has in the past been fairly subtle but
in this album they let the synth take the lead more and they
certainly made the right choice. Synth intros and bridges give the
songs a colder eerier feel than a guitar part would. The
synthesized leads on top of the rhythmically complex guitar, bass,
and drum parts are what creates the abstracted math-rock
coke-party atmosphere I mentioned earlier. Not helping my already
excited libido is the cold and smooth voice of Jake Snider. This
is a voice that could convince anyone to leave the party and head
back to his place. Certainly not someone I would not want my
girlfriend to be talking to at a party, as I would probably not be
seeing her again after that. Not that I could blame her. My final
thoughts on the album – love it. I highly recommend anyone who
enjoys really tight progressive math-rock pick up this album as
soon as you can. Advisably before your next date. Make sure Double
Vision Quest is playing when your date gets in the car, and by the
time White Mystery comes on, it will be a sure thing. I’m having
trouble coping with the fact that I’m alone and blogging a review
of the album rather than on a hot date right now. Jake Snider
where are you when I need you…

Printing in Gutsy

There is a kid in my programming class who has been having a nightmare getting Java installed on his computer at home. We’re in our 9th week of school and he still cannot get Java to install. My professor and I both suggested he try Linux, as it’s easier to do… almost everything. He didn’t seem to take our advice as he’s still having problems. Tomorrow I’m going to give him the Gutsy CD Jim gave me at Sunday night’s Gutsy Release party, along with a printout of our wiki page of Ubuntu resources. I upgraded my two pcs to Gutsy recently. My laptop has been running gutsy since tribe 3, but my tower, which is the family computer, needs to be stable or else my mom has a fit (as well she should), so it just got the upgrade a few nights ago. After the upgrade (which went more or less smoothly, we lost internet about halfway through so I had some dpkg stuff to play with), my printers were still there, smashing! Everything worked. I decided to test gutsy’s new printing dialog so i deleted my Canon MP160 printer (which was a bear to set up in feisty/edgy), and reinstall it. I just plugged it in and it worked!! The end!! Now my laptop did not have anything on it. Just as before, setting up the sharing had been a bit of a pain in the past, so, I set the printer to shared from my PC, enabled my laptop to look for shared printer, and voila! I had a canon mp160 I could print to!! Brilliant! Why again do we not have market share? Can windows do this? As far as I can recall, printers in windows are a PITA. Drivers to download, random manufacturer utilities, the list goes on and on. The scanner part of my printer even works! How great is that! My mom is very happy, as am I. Once again, Ubuntu wins, but the credit goes to the Gnome/Ubuntu team who got this new printing system hooked up, I can’t wait to see what kinds of awesome things show up in Hardy.

Yes, that is me passing you on the left at 30mph on King st. daily. How does it feel to know that your laziness is costing you time, money, and your children’s future. I gotta tell you, it feels pretty good knowing that my bicycle gets me where I need to go in the morning, faster than your car gets you. Feel free to switch anytime, I won’t judge.
